How to Join

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade students in school district #9 (and home schoolers, etc) are eligible to run Pirate Middle School Cross Country. Call or visit the school office at either Marshfield, Sunset, or Millicoma (they should be there the week of August 22nd) to get forms and information. Students must have a physical every two years to participate in sports in district #9. There is a special form for this physical available at the office. There are some other forms to sign (we call them the “I promise to behave” form and the “I promise not to sue anyone” form) and there’s a fee charged for each sport. Students must also present proof of insurance, or buy low-cost insurance through the school.

Equipment needs are pretty minimal! The most important thing is a good pair of shoes. Your running shoes should be comfortable with cloth (not vinyl or leather) uppers. We recommend going to a store like Big Five and trying on several pairs and running around inside the store to try them out. They shouldn’t rub and they should feel comfortable on your feet. It’s a good idea to shop the sales; if you do, you can plan on about $40 for a good pair of running shoes that will last you through both cross country and track season. We recommend that your running shoes be used for. . . drum roll. . . . running! They’re not for everyday use. You can plan on running about 300 miles in a pair of shoes before they will need to be replaced.

Athletes will be comfortable running in shorts and a t shirt. Sometimes it can get pretty cold, so a pair of sweats might come in handy!
