Hello Pirate Middle School Cross Country!
What a great week we had last week! We’ve been working really hard. Tim and I have been so impressed with this great bunch of athletes! You’ve all risen to the level of workout that we’ve asked from you. Awesome!
Myrtle Point was a fun meet! Tim enjoyed having the whole town of Myrtle Point sing happy birthday to him. He even blushed! And we ran pretty well, too! I don’t have results yet (I’ll get them on Thursday at district) but I heard our boys were 1st and the girls were 2nd. Good job! After the meet I had a good ride home on my bike. It was 24 miles. It would have been 25 but we live on top of a hill so I called Tim and had him pick me up at the bottom. Must have been you kids who wore me out. J
This week we will have much lighter workouts. We want you all rested and ready for district on Thursday! So just for fun, this week you can tell your friends that we are taking it easy in practice and only running a couple miles at a time. They will think you are crazy. It will be great!
Monday: practice
Tuesday: practice in a muddy place.
Wednesday: PICTURES! Brush your teeth, comb your hair, and wear your uniform! There will be picture packets available. I will either get them to you before Wednesday (if the photographer gets them to me in time) or you can pick them up on Wed. from the picture lady. They’ll take a team photo and will do individual photos for those who want them. They won’t be as awesome as our pictures of the long jump contest at the dunes, but they will be something you can have to remember our season. And that is a good thing.
Thursday: DISTRICT MEET AT TUGMAN PARK!! Girls race at 4:15, boys at 4:45. We will have a one-way bus to the park (no bus home, have your parents come get you or you’ll have to walk. Or steal Barb’s bike). Millicoma students will be excused at 1:10, the bus is leaving Millicoma at 1:25. Then we go to the high school to pick up our awesome eighth graders at 1:50 (excused from class at 1:30). After that the bus will drive to Sunset to load kids at 2:05 (excused from class at 1:55). After the races there’s a hot dog feed. Cody loves hot dogs; you will have to fight him for them.
I am in the process of setting up our awards night. I am trying to arrange for next Tuesday (the 25th) at the high school cafeteria. I will keep you all posted.

Hey Pirate Cross Country Runners!
Great job on Saturday! I hope you all got your shoes dried out after running through the surf and across the creek. Tim and I always love watching our athletes run the Sunset Invitational for a couple reasons: first of all it’s a beautiful course and who doesn’t love running at the beach? And second, we are at the point in our season where athletes are running distances and times they didn’t think they were capable of a few short weeks ago! It ROCKS that you guys go out every day after school and run a few miles! Most of your friends will never have that experience. We are very proud of you! We hope that you will enjoy running for the rest of your lives!
Next Saturday, Oct 15 is an exciting day for two reasons: 1) It’s Tim’s birthday! He will be a whopping 52 years old! Can you believe it? I bet most of you didn’t know that anyone could even get that old. We will have to look for an opportunity to sing happy birthday to him. We’ll be sure to look for a time when we can really embarrass him. J And, 2) We have a meet at Myrtle Point! This is a really fun race. It starts and ends at the high school in Myrtle Point. There is only one race—boys and girls all run together. We’ll take a bus up and back.
Here’s our schedule:
Monday, Oct 10: Practice!
Tuesday: Practice!
Wednesday: Guess what—practice!
Thursday: Um….practice!
Friday: no school! Stay home and eat ice cream!
Saturday, Oct 15: Myrtle Point Invitational! We will catch the bus in the parking lot by the track at Marshfield. Bus loads at 9:50, leaves at 10:00. The race is at 12:00. Immediately afterwards we get back on the bus and come home, so we’ll be back at Marshfield approximately 1:45.
Monday: Oct 17: Practice!
Tuesday: Practice!
Wednesday: Short, light practice!
Thursday, Oct 20: DISTRICT MEET AT TUGMAN PARK! Girls race at 4:00, boys at 4:30. There is usually an after-race time that involves hot dogs, too. That ought to make Cody happy, too!
Knock, Knock
Who’s there?
Boo
Boo who?
Don’t cry, cross country will be back again next year!

Wow! It’s hard to believe but we are getting pretty close to the end of our season! We have our home meet at Sunset Beach this Saturday, then we run at Myrtle Point the following Saturday, and the next week is District! I know that makes all our athletes so sad and they want to wail and cry. But don’t worry kids, we will run really really hard for the next couple weeks and then you won’t miss it so much when it ends!!!
Parents, you are probably noticing that your athlete is getting pretty tired by the end of the week. That’s normal for this part of the season. Eating well and getting enough sleep are really important right now. It’s also common for the kids to start dropping some weight. Packing an extra snack or two for them to eat during the day can help.
We also want to make sure that students aren’t feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork, practice, and meets. If anyone is concerned about a class or about not enough time to do homework, come talk to us! We’d be happy to work something out to help make things more comfortable.
Finally, I want to encourage athletes to think about the changing weather. You might want to wear some sweats to practice. Warm muscles are less easily injured, and warm athletes are less cranky.
Here’s what’s coming up:
Monday: regular practice
Tuesday: regular practice
Wednesday: regular practice. Can you believe how lucky you are to get to go for a run every day?
Thursday: We will take a bus out to Sunset Beach for our practice. We need to go over our home course so we will be ready for our meet on Saturday! Come to practice as usual and a bus will pick us up by the track at 4:00. We’ll ride out to the beach and go over the course. YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING OLD SHOES. THEY WILL LIKELY GET WET. We are hoping to be back to the track at MHS by 5:45. As we’ve already experienced, sometimes our plans get fouled up (one year when we did this we had it timed perfectly until we were on our way home and the bridge in Charleston was open). If we get delayed we’ll put kids on cell phones to let you know.
Friday: no school, no practice. Your poor old coaches need a day off.
Saturday: SUNSET BEACH INVITATIONAL!!!! There is no bus (coaches will be out at the beach early to get everything set up, so we can’t meet a bus). We’d like to have everyone there by 10:00. Girls race at 11:00, boys at 11:30. At 12:00 ***drum roll**** is an Open Division 3000 meter run! Parents, siblings, friends, neighbors—come and run the same course the kids run! This is an awesome time for parents to strut their stuff in front of their kids. C’mon, parents, let’s show those kids that although we’re old, we are still studs!
I do need parent volunteers during this race! I’ll need about 6 people to work the finish chute, a couple for traffic control, and at least one or two big burly guys to stand at strategic places on the course and make sure no one cuts (we call that “casting fear”). It’s nice if we can have enough volunteers that we can trade them off so they still get to watch their kids race. Just let me know and I’ll create a job for you!
Coming up: Saturday, Oct 15: Myrtle Point Invitational. They only run one race at this meet—girls and boys together. Our kids always love it!
District—we think the date will be changed to Wednesday the 19th instead of Thursday the 20th but are still waiting for confirmation. We will let you know as soon as we hear!
Awards—we always do an awards dessert at the end of the season. Parents: we consider this an extremely important part of what we do. We will let you know when and where when we get that settled.
You might be interested to know that while I was writing this Jake was asleep in the other room. He snores REALLY loud.

Announcements Sept 26-Oct 1
Hi Everyone! This is Jake the dog. I am writing to say thanks for letting me run with you last week. It was fun. First we ran to the top of the big hill. Then we ran down. Then I rescued Janey and Simon from being lost. I love Janey and Simon. Then I growled at Cody when he asked if he could long jump off the dune. Ha ha! That Cody is such a jokester. He knows he can’t long jump with a broken jaw! Then Barb and I watched while Hunter did some back flips. Barb watched him with her eyes closed. I do not know how she does that. Then Matthew threw the ball for me. He threw the ball and I brought it back to him. Then he threw the ball and I brought it back to him. Then he threw the ball and I brought it back to him. Then we did that some more. He threw the ball until I was too tired to go get it anymore. Matthew is the first person who has ever done that for me. I love him. Then we ran down the hill to the bus. Jaycee gave me some water to drink. I love Jaycee. Hannah K wants me to go to her house. I love Hannah K. I love Hannah K’s house. Then Barb helped me get in the car because I was too tired to climb in there myself. I love her. Then we went home and I took a long nap. Now I am saying thank you to you all because I love you, and I love running with you. It was the best day of my life.
Barb says since I am writing to you I might as well write the announcements for this week at the same time. Barb is very busy. She is watching the football on the TV and yelling at the quarterback because he is a wuss and did not throw the ball right. She is very busy and I love her so I will write the announcements.
Monday, Sept 26 is a running practice day. I love running. You are so lucky to get to do it.
Tuesday is a race day at Cape Blanco State Park. I love that park although I have not been there. You will get to ride a bus there and back home again. I do not like buses. They are kind of scary.
Sunset kids excused from class 11:35, load bus 11:45
MHS students excused from class 12:00, load bus 12:10
Millicoma students excused from class 12:25, load bus 12:35
Cape Blanco State Park is just north of Port Orford. Girls race at 3:30, boys at 4:00. Barb guesses that it could be 6:30 or 7:00 by the time you all get back to MHS. She will be tired when she gets home but I will lick her face and then she will feel better. You might want to bring food with you in case you get hungry. I love food.
Wednesday is a practice day. You will all get to go for a run.
Thursday is another practice day. I wonder what you will do? Maybe you will go for a run.
Friday there is no school. You should take a nap. That is what I will be doing. I love naps.
Saturday Oct 1 you get to race at Woahink State Park! It will be the best day of your life. All students will ride the bus from MHS. Load the bus at the track at 7:30. The bus will leave at 7:45. If you are not on time you will have to wear the cone of shame. That would not be good. Girls race at 10:00, boys at 10:30. There will be awards through 10th place in each race, at 11:30. Then you will all come home on the bus to MHS, at 1:00 or 1:30. You had better bring food again. You might feel hungry. I love food. When you get home you should take a nap. That is what I would do.
Now I am all done writing. Tim wants me to go to him so he can scratch my ears. I love my ears being scratched. I love Tim. Goodbye.

We had quite an exciting first week of school! We hope to never have one that exciting again!
Cody is doing well. He did break his jaw, and it is now wired together to keep it still while it heals. He will hopefully be there to cheer us on (carefully) at our first meet this Wednesday! I know you all will be excited to see him.
Speaking of our first meet, it will be held on Wednesday the 14th at the SWOCC campus. Here’s everything you need to know about that:
- Students will be transported to the meet by team bus. The bus will arrive at Millicoma at 1:40 and leave by 1:50, then drive to the High School and arrive at the auditorium at 2:00. We will depart MHS at 2:05 and drive to Sunset, arriving at 2:20. Millicoma students will load at the front of the school and the bus will leave at 2:20 and drive us to SWOCC. Students will be excused from class 10 minutes before the bus arrives at each school, and will change into uniforms at school before boarding the bus. Obviously you won’t have much time to mess around!
- Parents: when you come to watch the meet, here’s how to find us: go in the main entrance to SWOCC, across from WalMart. At the first stop sign, turn right. Continue through the next stop sign to go around the track. When you get to the next stop sign, turn into the parking lot on your right. We are starting on the baseball field.
- There is no bus after the meet. You may go home with parents from the meet.
I know it’s been a bit of a hassle getting everyone cleared for participation this year. Students who are not cleared will not be allowed to travel to the meet with us. If you have any doubts about whether or not you’re eligible, ask at the office. I will also try to communicate with athletes about this. I know some of you have been back to the school several times trying to get this completed, and I want to thank you for your patience!
Here’s our schedule for the week:
Monday 12th: Regular practice. We will begin making sure athletes know what to expect at their first race.
Tuesday: Regular practice. We will hand out uniforms.
Wednesday: North Bend Invitational at SWOCC. Girls race at 4:00, boys at 4:30.
Thursday: Regular practice.
Saturday: Optional race for those who want to do it: Prefontaine Memorial Run. Parents please go ahead and register your kids at prefontainerun.com. When you register, indicate that they are part of a team and I think you’ll get a discounted registration fee.
Sunday: Also optional: Pre for Kids! Registration form is online at http://www.bgc-sworegon.org/main_sublinks.asp?id=7&sid=89 or you can register at the race beginning at 12:00. Race starts at 1:00. Registration and the race start are in front of the Puerto Vallarta Restaurant in downtown Coos Bay. Parents can go ahead and register athletes who are interested (it’s $15). I will be there at the start of the race.
Go Pirates!

Pirate Middle School Cross Country
Week of Sept 6-9
We’ve already gotten off to a great start with over 30 athletes attending pre-season workouts! If you’re just starting, don’t worry, we will get you in shape and you’ll do just fine. Our first meet takes place the middle of next week so this week’s workouts will focus on getting everyone ready for that race. Some of you are experienced runners and you know the drill; some of you are new to the sport. For our newbies, the first meet is all about learning what a cross-country race looks like.
Some important announcements:
1) By now each athlete MUST have all the paperwork done and filed with the schools. This includes having a current physical, parents and students signing the athletic code of conduct; and providing proof of insurance. The fee must be paid or arrangements made for that. The schools are supposed to give you an athletic card when this process is completed but I’m aware that Sunset and Millicoma may have not been doing that. If there is any doubt whether you have completed this, please call your school office and make sure. I have no choice but to exclude athletes who have not completed this task.
2) The Pre and Pre for Kids (PfK) are coming up (Sept 17 & 18)! Under OSAA regulations, it is not possible for the school to pay entry fees for these races. If you want to do either race, please go ahead and register on your own, but let your coaches know. We want to modify your workouts to accommodate these races if you’re doing them.
3) We will know after this week how the bus thing from the middle schools is going to work out. We do know that students from Sunset will ride bus 31 and those from Millicoma will be on bus 12 every day after school to get to practice at the high school. We’ll keep you posted if anything changes.
Here’s our schedule for the week:
Tuesday: regular practice. Hopefully done by 5:15.
Wednesday: regular practice.
Thursday: timed out-and-back run.
Friday: no practice.
Running: what a great way to spend the week! Parents: please don’t hesitate to call us with questions!

Wow, it’s almost time for school to start!! Here’s the info that athletes need to know:
PRACTICE will be held every day after school (M-Th) at the Marshfield track. Sixth and seventh graders from Sunset will board bus #31 after school and be brought to the High School. Millicoma 6th and 7th graders will ride bus #12 from Millicoma to MHS. Both groups will be dropped off at the auditorium. For the first week we will try to be there to meet them. We will get them to restrooms where they can change to running clothes, then down to the track to throw stuff in the back of Tim’s truck, then off on our run! We hope to finish practices by 5:15. We will know more about that after the first week.
By now athletes must have completed the SIGN-UP process with the school. This means physicals done, papers signed, fees paid. This registration can be completed at Sunset, Millicoma, or MHS (in Pirate Hall).
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions!

Many of you are wondering what cross country is going to look like this season. Here’s the lowdown on cross country for middle schoolers:
Our name is changing! We are now “Pirate Middle School Cross Country”. We will run all our practices from Marshfield high school. We still welcome 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys and girls to the team, and as usual all three grades will race together as one team. But now we are the Pirates and our colors are purple and gold!
Our first practice will be August 22 (Monday) at 4:00 pm. We will meet at the high school track and go for a short run. Practices will be held on Mondays-Thursdays at the high school and will last about an hour.
After school starts we will continue to practice from the high school. The 6th and 7th graders will ride a bus to Marshfield and we will not start practice until they get there. As we get closer to school starting we will let everyone know about exact practice times and bus numbers.
Here’s what you need to do to be eligible to run with us:
1) Sign up with the school. This should be able to be completed at any of the three schools. You must have a current sports physical (your physical is good for two years). You also must have proof of insurance and you must sign the code of conduct and a release. There is a $50 fee that will need to be paid.
2) Call us if you have any questions! 541-267-7960.
3) show up for practice on the 22nd! It will be amazing.
